Hackers // Body Scanners // Maggie Jackson // Culture of Distraction //
Katherine discusses several new hacking cases in Maine and some reasons why such hacking is done. The new airport scanners have much more radiation than initially thought and may greatly increase the odds of getting cancer, particularly skin cancer. Maggie Jackson has a intriguing discussion about the culture of distraction caused by tweets, texts, cell phones, social networking sites and the like. Layering or splicing time, aka multitasking, is causing changes to our brains and reducing our ability to focus. Maggie shares some fascinating insights from her book DISTRACTED: The Erosion of Attention and the Coming Dark Age. Welcome to new affiliate KVEL.

Casino Chips // RFID // "I hate Wal-Mart" //
Looks like the end is nigh for anonymous gambling. Poker chips are now being embeded with RFID microchips, enabling "casinos to verify the authenticity and value of each chip, plaque and jeton, reducing the possibility of counterfeits, staff pilferage or errors in casino currency counts." Katherine talks about the evils of customer loyalty cards in the UK's Asda stores. Thanks to Tasha and David for calling in with their comments!
